Congratulations go to our long time supporter Frank Holohan on the awarding of a medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community of Dandenong and local government in the Australia Day Awards. Frank has lived and worked in the City for in excess of 50 years in a life’s commitment here.
Firstly, Frank married a local from Stud Road, Majella and he will be the first to say that whatever he has achieved, has been through the grace of Majella with her total support and willingness to pick up the slack in other areas of family life.
Frank worked as a real estate agent for many years, working for others in Dandenong and Springvale before deciding he may as well set up his own agency in Dandenong. He worked hard to develop it into a premier sales and rental agency before retiring and selling it to McLennan Real Estate about 2014. Throughout this time, Frank proudly sponsored the Dandenong Cricket Club. When he sold, he ensured that Daryl Rayner would continue as a valuable supporter.
Frank was a councillor for the City of Dandenong from 1973 to 1990 and 1993-94 and was Mayor on two occasions, in 1977-78 and 1984-85. These times were ones of rapid growth both residentially in the north and commercially in the heart of Dandenong. In the sporting field we saw the establishment of the pool and basketball in Stud Road, the social rooms at Shepley and the building of new ovals and Pavilions for sports clubs. He served as representative for council on sewage and water matters. In addition to all this he found time for the Dandenong Hospital and has an appointment as a life governor.
Frank was an avid sportsperson in his younger days, enjoying playing cricket and being an annoying utility at football. He takes pride in his time at the Redlegs on Shepley as the team runner. Frank is a past President of the DDCA and tribunal chair and was awarded life membership in 1991. He was a keen follower of StMarys Cricket Club and President in 1986-87. He served as President of the Dandenong Basketball Association and is a life member of the Dandenong City Soccer Club. The fields bear his name.
As mentioned previously Frank was a valuable sponsor of our club before moving on to the committee where he served as Vice President and a key monitor and mentor to many of us. He ran the bar for many years before handing it on to his apprentice Dennis. In 2015 he was granted a thoroughly deserved life membership.
There is no doubt that the time he spends with us on a Saturday is joyous. He has loved following the careers of those in the last decade or so, no doubt principally amongst them, Brett. He enjoys the little conversations and recognition from the players and volunteers and has formed some close friendships through cricket. He has been a continued presence through some indifferent health.
Frank has been a leading presence in local government, sport and church in our community and we at Dandenong warmly congratulate him on a well deserved recognition.
